Building community in a world where people don’t talk to each other about things that matter deeply to them is sometimes hard. Family life topics such as: supporting people with mental health issues, learning disabilities and severe allergies [particularly food] are tough to discuss. You are not alone and together we can build community and resources for all our families.
I have a learning disability. I got through our educational system and now I have a son who is struggling in the same ways I did with dyslexia. I have worked with three school districts as we navigated the systems looking for a good educational fit. Through extensive testing, IEP meetings and mental health screenings I have learned a lot; the hard way. I want to share what I’ve learned and help you to share what you know so we all become stronger. I have learned, first hand, that being open about my experiences has empowered others to feel both “normal” and not alone.
Sitting with other parents over dinner and talking about our struggles I realized that we were re-engaging with an age old system of support. I remember being on my Grand Mother’s cattle ranch in Wyoming and how the family shared their problems and hashed them out over the dinner table. I concluded we need to go back to this communal problem solving practice, but with a new twist. We can share comfort food, cooking, family issues and experience and at the end of the meal, feel like we have a solid path to follow with the expertise of our extended internet family.
